Digital Storytelling Apps

Digital Storytelling is defined as
"the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories".

Digital Storytelling is becoming more and more common and there are now some fabulous apps to use on the iphone, ipod touch, and ipad to help students create stories digitally.

Here are a few great ones I've found recently:

Toontastic by Launchpad Toys $2.99
Description from the iTunes store:
Lights, Camera, Play! Toontastic is a Creative Learning tool that empowers kids to draw, animate, and share their own cartoons through imaginative play. Making cartoons with Toontastic is as easy as putting on a puppet show - simply press the record button, move your characters onscreen, and tell your stories through play! Once you’re done, Toontastic will play back your animation and voice as a cartoon for you to share with friends and family around the world.
Creating a Cartoon with Toontastic is as Easy as…
1. Select a scene on the Story Arc: A Setup, Conflict, Challenge, Climax, or Resolution.
2. Draw your own Setting and Characters, or custom color a Character from our collection of pirates, princesses, swashbucklers, and more.
3. Press the Start Animation button and move your characters around onscreen, telling your story through play. Toontastic will record and play back your animations and your voice as an animated cartoon.
4. Choose the music for your scene by adjusting the scene’s Emotional Energy level and plotting out the perfect Story Arc.
5. Title your cartoon and upload it to ToonTube for friends and family to see all around the world!

Description from the iTunes store:
Create your own personal comic book strips using photos from your photo album or iPhone camera. Start by selecting one of the many included strip templates. Add photos to the cells. Position, scale and rotate the photos freely within the cells. Move, resize, and rotate cells to create your own personal layout. Add text balloons, and position them on your photos. Choose font, color, opacity and text-size. Add stickers with cartoon exclamations to spice up your stories. While you work, you can freely pan and zoom to control even the smallest details. Paint on photos or draw your own cells from scratch. Create masked images ("cutouts") using photos from your photo-album, and position them anywhere on the strip. Once you have finished your masterpiece you can save it to your photo album, email it to your friends, upload it to Facebook or Flickr, or create a Tweet with Twitter and Twitpic.

Description from the iTunes store:
Create an electronic storybook. Make use of the little gaps in life - on the sofa after dinner, in the back seat of the car, or on a train - to do something creative together.  To create your story: * Write some text. * Illustrate by drawing on the screen, taking a photograph of something you see, or drawing on paper and then photographing the paper, or attaching photos from your album. * Sounds can be recorded for telling your story or as sound effects. * Layout the elements of your story (text boxes, images, and sound clips) freely by dragging them or pinching to resize. * Add, reorder, or delete pages from your book.
Your story is always saved in your iPhone. Carry it with you and work on it any time. Upload your story to the StoryKit web server and email a link to the story from within the app. No account is necessary. Stories are private. The application includes four public domain children's books that you can rewrite and rearrange into your own new story. These are scans of the original bound books that have been specially processed for use on the iPhone. Take "The Three Bears" and make them four. Rewrite "The Three Little Pigs" with the wolf as the victim. Or, start with a blank book and write whatever story is on your minds.
